Public Library – Arnona | Building Visions for the Future of Jerusalem

Public Library – Arnona

Our Jerusalem Vision facilitator formed a local residential group made up of mostly women which decided to create a public space focused on activities in the neighbourhood. The residential group initiated a working plan to establish a small open public library which was to be built from discarded books. With the plan, the residents received an additional grant from Eden for Place Making that contributed towards supplies and the artist engagement who worked to create the public space. The group also gathered books from small public libraries and residents. The Jerusalem municipality supported the project by paving a path to the site for the residents to have handicap access. The opening event was attended by 60 people from the local community and included a kid’s puppet show. At the end of the activity, children’s books, written in Hebrew and Arabic, were given away to all the children who participated in the event. A sustainably community was set up with local residents which organizes ongoing local outdoor events including: children’s English hour, story time, lectures, talks, live music and other residential events focused on love of books and reading.
